Redan Zimbabwe goes live

After a fairly extensive incubation period, Redan’s new site went live. The extensive use of custom frameworks has helped create and interface for clients and dealers to interact with Redan. The nice thing is there is an open ended platform in place where we can plug in new technology as it becomes available. Dealers can log in and get in direct touch with Redan to update vital data in real time.

Final Cut Pro X

There was a lot of hype around the Final Cut Pro update which has been dotted with disappointment and confusion. The question is whether Apple have finally ironed out the kinks in this version. I have been using Final cut Pro for 7 years or so and I am now considering either going up to Final Cut Pro X or looking for another capable non-linear editor. My trial will begin soon and I will keep you updated.

GoPro into the Workflow

Macyoga studio is investing into the GoPro line of cameras and will be shooting various productions on this platform. GoPro is a predominantly sport and action camera, however I feel like there is a lot of potential here that needs exploring. The platform is revolutionary and I’m expected to get my first camera in the next week or so.

Now I am busy looking into the workflow for ingesting and editing the data. You can expect an update on this soon!

The Kill Bill Shoot

In my spare time I shoot Practical Pistol at Cleveland Pistol Club and on the 13th October I was given the task to arrange a 6 stage shoot. With help from fellow members and some sponsorship I managed to get from some friendly companies, we had a great shoot and beat the rain that came crashing down as we walked off stage 6. Thanks to Track-IT, Sherib Textiles, Archers Access, M&S Technologies, Taita Trading and Kariba Ferries for their sponsorship of cash and prizes. This small video was done hastily to give you some idea of the sport.

Birdwoods Metal Sculpture

Being back in Zimbabwe has been great, the climate and the access to the outdoors is legendary. Then to add to all that awesomeness is companies like Birdwoods who take old metal oil drums and create the most magical sculpture. Add to that their commitment to the community and how many families they support through their business and you really have something truly epic. Joy Denton was great to work with and this collaboration with Tana from Coolbean was great!

Veneto Region Promo Video

I love Italy and have worked on a project or two over there, so it was with great pleasure I was asked to produce a video for the entire Asia-Pacific region and China market which aimed to highlight the attractions of Veneto, Italy.
I was given access to great footage that needed to be cut and edited together to give a sense of the region. I chose to separate out the video into distinct themes: Cities and People. By placing the people in the context of the places I wanted to appeal to the potential of the destinations for vacation as well as their history, food and elegance.

The motion graphics were done with Apple’s Motion and the video was edited in Final Cut Pro.

Armadale Lodge Refresh

When a client comes back after a successful project and wants to take the plunge, it’s exciting. The initial Armadale website was well liked, easy to navigate and stayed true to the brand. What could we do better? Well a lot.

The new website features a full booking engine with resource allocation that is scalable. The website handles all bookings and general enquiries.

Building websites for new clients is always fun and challenging at the same time. When I got the opportunity to work on the re-launch of Pam Golding Zimbabwe’s online showroom it was fantastic. Zimbabwe has been going through a very big shift in internet access and we decided to push the boundaries and develop the first truly accessible and relevant real estate platform. Subscriber numbers are through the roof and the interaction online from clients is amazing.

Cooking For The President

When I was approached by Ms Wee Eng Hwa to work on the photographs she had collected over many years, I was expecting a job that could be completed relatively quickly, say four to six weeks. It was not until I began collating the data of the many hard-drives and started doing some calculations on the image count that I realised I would need to go through several hundred thousand images. My estimate is that I viewed more than half a million pictures and many of them more than once.

The workflow was something I had to create specifically for this job to make sure I got all the images to start. Then I referenced the files into Lightroom and began slowly making choices as to what we would keep and what would be removed. The whole time I needed a fall back solution and obviously making sure the original files were untouched and safe.

The complexity of the cataloguing and updates were taxing on computer resources and data allocation, but eventually after many months were down to about 10 thousand digital photos that still needed careful scrutiny.

Colour correction was challenging considering the photographs were not colour balanced when shot and I needed to be sure my finals that had been processed through my digital darkroom were perfect. I would spend up to an hour on a single image to make sure it was going to print perfect and capture the wonderful food portrayed in the book.

Another incredible challenge came mid-way through the project when I was asked to digitally restore an archive of family photos going back to the early days of President Wee Kim Wee as a reporter and diplomat. The importance of keeping the integrity of the photos was paramount and with the purchase of special scanning tools I was able to correct images, restore, touch up and prepare them for print. What an incredible privilege to be trusted with these historic documents.

3 years after the project began I attended the Book launch attended by President S R Nathan and Mrs Wee Kim Wee. A wonderful result of this project is my friendship with the author Wee Eng Hwa.
